UAE Welcomes Pakistan-Afghanistan Ceasefire Agreement for Regional Peace

The UAE has welcomed an immediate ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and Afghanistan, commending Qatar and Turkey’s diplomatic efforts in facilitating the landmark accord. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to supporting regional security and stability initiatives that advance peace and development across South Asia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on Wednesday issued a formal statement expressing the UAE’s support for the ceasefire agreement between the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Afghanistan, alongside mechanisms designed to strengthen peace and stability between the two neighboring countries.

The Ministry specifically commended the diplomatic efforts of the State of Qatar and the Republic of Turkey, crediting both nations with facilitating constructive dialogue and mutual understanding that made the agreement possible.

Regional Peace Priority

“The UAE reaffirmed its support for all efforts aimed at enhancing regional security and stability, and fulfilling the aspirations of the peoples of both Pakistan and Afghanistan for peace and development,” the statement noted.

“The UAE reaffirmed support for all efforts aimed at enhancing regional security and stability, and fulfilling the aspirations of the peoples of both Pakistan and Afghanistan for peace and development.”

The official position reflects the UAE’s broader commitment to fostering stability across neighboring regions, particularly as tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have periodically disrupted regional trade, security cooperation, and humanitarian efforts.

Muslim Council of Elders Endorsement

The Muslim Council of Elders, chaired by Dr. Ahmed Al Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al Azhar, also welcomed the ceasefire, describing it as “a significant step towards de-escalating tensions and fostering peace and stability in the region.”

The Council commended both Pakistan and Afghanistan for responding to “the calls of reason, wisdom and human conscience,” emphasizing alignment with Islamic principles that prioritize the preservation of life, neighborliness, and dialogue over conflict.

In its statement, the Council urged both countries to fully adhere to the agreement’s terms, protect civilians, and work toward shared security and development objectives. The organization also praised Qatar and Turkey’s diplomatic initiatives, noting their role in creating an environment conducive to constructive dialogue.

Strategic Significance

The ceasefire carries significance for the broader Gulf region, as Pakistan and Afghanistan’s stability directly affects migration patterns, trade routes, and security concerns that impact UAE interests. Pakistan hosts one of the world’s largest refugee populations, including Afghan nationals, while Afghanistan serves as a crucial transit point for regional commerce.

The agreement represents a rare moment of diplomatic progress in a relationship marked by decades of border tensions, cross-border militant activities, and periodic military clashes. Both countries share a 2,600-kilometer border and have experienced recurring disputes over the Durand Line demarcation and security challenges.
