India’s financial capital is preparing to launch a state-of-the-art airport that promises to ease congestion and significantly boost the country’s aviation capabilities, with plans to handle 90 million passengers annually.

Mumbai is on the verge of a major aviation milestone with the imminent inauguration of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), a sprawling 1,100-hectare facility designed to address the city’s growing air traffic challenges.

Key highlights of the new airport include:

  • Located 40km from Mumbai’s commercial center
  • Connected by India’s longest sea-bridge
  • Two parallel runways
  • Projected to handle 90 million passengers annually
  • India’s first fully digital airport

Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airport Holdings Limited, emphasized the critical need for this infrastructure: “The current airport has hit its capacity of 55 million passengers annually. There’s already demand for an additional 20 million and we are set to meet that at Navi Mumbai.”

The airport represents a significant step in India’s aviation growth, with the sector experiencing double-digit expansion in recent years. Indian airlines have ordered approximately 1,900 new aircraft, with 1,000 expected to be delivered in the next five years.

However, challenges remain, particularly around connectivity. The airport’s distant location means travel times of two to three hours from some Mumbai suburbs, and a direct metro connection is still years away.

Despite these initial hurdles, experts like Shukor Yusof from Enadu Analytics view NMIA as a crucial development: “NMIA will make Mumbai the first large Indian city to operate two airports – a demonstration of the growing importance of India as an aviation market.”

Initial airline partnerships are promising, with Indigo, Akasa Airlines, and Air India already planning routes from the new airport. The facility aims to eventually become an international hub comparable to Singapore and Dubai.
