Dubai is set to revolutionize urban transportation by introducing dedicated self-driving zones across three key neighborhoods, marking a significant step towards the city’s ambitious goal of making one in four journeys autonomous by 2030.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled plans for Dubai’s first autonomous transport zones, strategically located in Dubai Festival City, Creek Harbour, and Al Jaddaf. These 12 square kilometer zones will serve as pioneering hubs for various self-driving technologies, including robotaxis, autonomous buses, and even self-navigating boats.
Starting at the end of 2025, residents and visitors can expect to see multiple autonomous transport options:
• Robotaxis will begin public trials in early 2026
• Robobuses will cover 20 kilometers of dedicated roads
• Autonomous abras will operate across 10 kilometers of waterways
• Delivery robots will handle last-mile drop-offs in a 3.8-kilometer zone
Leading technology firms like Baidu’s Apollo Go, WeRide, and Pony.ai have already received permits to test their autonomous vehicles in these designated areas. The RTA believes this controlled approach will help demonstrate the safety and efficiency of driverless technologies.
The autonomous zones represent more than just a technological showcase. They are a practical implementation of Dubai’s vision to reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety, and create a more efficient urban transportation ecosystem.
By 2030, Dubai aims to have one-quarter of all journeys completed using autonomous vehicles, positioning itself at the forefront of global smart city innovations.
